Ways to give now to
St Martin’s Church, Liskeard
1 Chronicles 29:11
“Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.”
Why do we give?
Giving through our church should be more about our need to give than giving to a need, although it does cost money to run the church.
Giving is part and parcel of our lives as Christians, and stems from our response to God’s generosity to us. In our communion services we often quote from 1 Chronicles 29:11 in the Bible.
Why does the church need money?
The church is a registered charity (No. 1130720) and needs income to meet its obligations and fulfil its mission and ministry. It costs nearly £6,500 every single week to run our church, maintain and heat the buildings and employ the staff team. Whilst we do receive grant funding from the Diocese of Truro and other external funders, nearly half our total income comes from an amazingly generous group of church members as planned giving and other one-off donations.
How much should we give?
God is more interested in our attitude to giving than the amount. We give from what we have, so our giving should be proportionate to our income.
The Bible talks about “first fruits”, setting aside from the first of the harvest, rather than giving to God what is spare at the end of the harvest. Since most of us are not farmers these days, we talk about giving from our income at the start of the month, not from what we have left at the end.
Our giving is planned, and meaningful. It is not like putting some loose change in a street collector’s box – whatever spare change we have in our pockets this week. It is given willingly, and not out of duty, nor grudgingly, as “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Many people work on the biblical idea of a tithe, or a tenth of their income, as their giving to the church, and then also give to other charities and causes over and above that tenth to the church. However, as we said at the beginning, God is more interested in the way we give and our attitude to money than the amount we give.

Is my giving confidential?
Absolutely! The only person in our church who has access to information about our members’ giving is our treasurer, who needs it to comply with the church’s legal obligations.
Giving through PGS involves an outside organisation, and clearly some individuals in those organisations will also have access to your information.
